René was baptised in the United Congregational Church, confirmed in the Methodist church and ordained in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, in the Cape Town Diocese. She was raised in a Christian family in Apartheid South Africa. Survival skills included the ability to think quickly, run fast and listen carefully, hold paradox and ambiguity, and mostly practise discernment and smile in the face of injustice. She has been involved in ministry and grassroots community since 1985, while in high school. She works at the Warehouse and is passionate about finding new hermeneutical tools.
